LEUVEN MINDGATE

Leuven MindGate Events Visionary seminar 'Blockchain: distributed trust'

Blockchain: distributed trust

Organised in cooperation with imec.

Some background information

At a class re-union I asked my friend who became a banker what he was doing in life. “We are conducting legal customer fraud,” was his answer, funny among friends. But yet it was symptomatic for the time around the - not so funny - late-2000s world financial crisis. Incredible amounts of money were gambled away, and maybe more importantly, trust.

The financial crisis has led to the development of a virtual money technology that has shown to be fraud proof, and can therefore bring the trust back. The core concept is based on blockchains, which can be generalized to record any kind of transactions, and information exchange that is fraud proof, easily verifiable by anyone, thus eliminating need for the roles of intermediaries and central authorities, and saving on delay and costs of these transactions.

It is clear that this technology has high impact potential beyond the financial industry. This technology may turn out to be as important as the invention of the book or of the internet.

In this seminar we shed light on the future of this technology by learning from world class experts and visionaries about the technology, current and future applications, and also the legal and technological implications of blockchains.

The interventions will be held in English.
