3D bioprinting is the process in which combinations of biomaterials and cells are printed in a three-dimensional predefined shape with the aim of creating man-made functional tissues. Compared to more traditional biofabrication methods, the 3D bioprinting technology allows for a higher spatial precision. These printed tissues can be used as living implants to replace damaged or non-functional tissues and organs such as skin, bone and liver. Alternatively, printed tissues can be used as screening platforms for the testing of new drugs, reducing animal experimentation. Finally, given their high accuracy, 3D printed tissues can be used to investigate fundamental biological questions on cell-material interaction.
Despite the big hype that is created around 3D bioprinting and the images that circulate on hearts rolling out of the printer, the raw facts paint a more modest picture. Much of the current work on 3D bioprinting is still in an early research. ln this visionary seminar we will provide an overview of the state of play on 3D bioprinting. We will address the technological challenges related to the design of the machines and the materials, the regulatory framework as well as the uptake of bioprinted tissues in the clinic. |
