Organised by Leuven.Inc in cooperation with imec, powered by DSP Valley
This visionary seminar “Spotlights on Light” commemorates 2015 as the International Year of the Light, and, 2015 as the 50 years of the Moore’s law.
The challenge posed by copper wire for transmission lines (100s of kilometers long) for high speed communication was solved by optical fibers. The optical fiber introduction not only revolutionized terrestrial communication but enabled submarine optical networks, spanning the vast oceans, connecting continents at high speeds and also drastically changed the world of Datacom.
Can bringing light on semiconductor chips create another wave of high-tech revolution? Since early 1980s CMOS photonics has come a long way from proof of concept to first profit making companies. Will CMOS photonics fulfill its potential providing high speed communications on chip and give life to the Moore’s law for another 50 years? Can silicon photonics draw on the tremendous quality of the CMOS industry to produce healthcare products which are very cheap yet highly personalized for the growing population? If these are the potential applications then what is being done to get there and how soon.
By attending this visionary seminar, you will know how light can brighten the future of information technology, healthcare and more.
