Private Cloud with OpenStack: Fundamentals & Hands-on


Course description

This training offers a one-day introduction to OpenStack, one of the most prominent private IaaS solutions available on the market today. The focus is on gaining a high-level understanding of OpenStack, its components and supporting technologies. The learning outcomes of this training are that participants can:

  • Analyze the characteristics of the different cloud deployment models and evaluate them with respect to their business objectives,
  • Describe what OpenStack is and what services it provides,
  • Reason about OpenStack’s logical architecture and its components,
  • Compare different deployment architectures of OpenStack and its supporting technologies.

During the course, participants will get a hands-on introduction to deploying virtual machines on OpenStack.

Target audience

The course is intended for IT infrastructure managers, system/enterprise architects, technical leads, ICT managers, R&D managers, etc.

10:00 - 10:30   Positioning of OpenStack in the cloud landscape
10:30 - 12:00   Hands-on with OpenStack and guidance by instructors (dashboard and command line)
12:00 - 13:00   Sandwich lunch (and possibility to continue hands-on)
13:00 - 14:00   OpenStack logical architecture and components
14:00 - 14:15   Coffee break
14:15 - 15:15   Overview of OpenStack deployment and technology decisions
15:15 - 15:30   Coffee break
15:30 - 16:30   Technical introduction into OpenStack networking and storage technology
16:30 - 17:00   Q&A and round-up

Instructors

Wouter De Borger holds a PhD in computer science and is specialised in the monitoring and debugging of large-scale distributed systems and complex data transformations.  Furthermore, he has experience with distributed data processing (Spark, MapReduce,...) and distributed workflow engines.

Bart Vanbrabant holds a PhD in computer science and is specialised in operating large-scale distributed systems with an emphasis on configuration management. He deployed and manages an OpenStack IceHouse cluster with OpenVSwitch and Ceph distributed storage.

Stefan Walraven holds a PhD in computer science and is specialised in middleware and software engineering methods for cloud computing, with particular focus on multi-tenant and multi-cloud Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) applications. Furthermore, he has experience with several Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) offerings, such as Google App Engine, Windows Azure, Force.com and Red Hat OpenShift.
