Organised by Leuven.Inc in cooperation with imec.
Autonomous driving has often been in the news lately. We hear about driverless research cars being tested in California, driving to a consumer electronics show in Las Vegas and even crossing the American continent from West to East. Or we see cars platooning on the Swedish highways as if they were train wagons, coupled to each other through a virtual chain. Autonomous cars promise safer transportation, less traffic jams and improved mobility for the elderly.
How far are we between research dreams and commercial reality? Between autonomous cars that drive in more or less controlled environments, and autonomous cars in real traffic conditions, where they can handle all road situations and do not need an attentive human to intervene when necessary and to be blamed when things would go wrong? What will happen when human-driven cars and fully autonomous cars share the roads? How will we gradually evolve from today's cars, where a growing number of sensor systems assist the driver, to the ultimate fully autonomous cars that bring us comfortably from our home to our favorite holiday location in Southern Europe, even during the night while we sleep? Will the roads and the road infrastructure need adaptations?
This visionary seminar will answer all these questions and many more. It will be brought to you by experts who are intimate to the topic, some of them having "driven" an autonomous car themselves. They either run life test facilities, develop sensing systems for the car manufacturers or actually manufacture cars. The only aspect they leave to your imagination is how you would use such fully autonomous vehicle.
