This seminar is an organization of Leuven.Inc, supported by LSEC and L-ICT.
ICT services such as Saas, cloud computing and social media have led to a real data explosion. Every day, exa-bytes of data are being generated and this trend is only increasing. Nowadays, big data plays an important role in statistical analysis, (user) profiling, etc., and even allows companies to make real-time forecasts and decisions. This technology offers unique opportunities and has been an enabler for applications such as DNA sequencing, data mining, personalised services on social media, etc. Big data even improves security services such as fraud detection. Nevertheless, besides these clear benefits related to big data, one should be careful, as with many other new technological developments, to avoid some common pitfalls stemming from security and privacy issues. There are some practical obstacles related to both legal, technical, ethical and even socio-economical challenges. For example, from a legal point of view, one could wonder who owns the user (profiling) data: is it the user himself or the service provider? Is it even legal or correct from an ethical point of view to profile customers and gather big data? And how to use technology to enhance the user's privacy?
These and many other questions will be discussed in this seminar. The goal is to give an overview of the multidisciplinary aspects related to security and privacy of big data. This will allow companies, policy makers and researchers to get a clear view on legal and ethical requirements, and learn the state-of-the-art and innovative technical solutions designed to improve the security and privacy level of services and applications based on big data. We end the seminar with a concrete business case which shows how security and privacy of big data is being addressed already today.
