Kick-off Crosstalks project: Progress in plastics

From recycling to the end of waste

The use of plastics is a complex thing. Over the years it has brought us many advantages. Plastics are cheap to produce, strong, easy to be moulded, resistant to water, odors and bacteria, light in weight… Yet, their popularity has also led to a rise in plastic waste which causes many environmental problems. The use of biopolymers and biodegradable plastics could be part of the solution, yet a severe focus on the prevention of waste, the re-use and recycling and recovery of plastics is perhaps even more important.
