LEUVEN MINDGATE

Leuven.Inc Visionary seminar: Accurate Positioning Everywhere

Organised by Leuven.Inc in cooperation with imec. Powered by FMTC.

The application potential of localization systems has been proven by the advent of gps in many electronic appliances. Not only car navigation profits from gps but also automatic ship guidance, anti theft systems, accurate time references and so on. This is however only the proverbial top of the iceberg. A lot of evolution in the domain of electronic localization is still to be expected. A first evolutionary step will come from the widespread development and use of indoor locationing systems. These systems can be much more accurate and update more frequently than the outdoor systems. This comes of course at a reduced range. In this seminar the possibilities to develop indoor localization systems together with their potential applications will be projected.

Not only indoor localization systems will lead to further deployment of electronic localization systems. Further evolution of outdoor systems is also to be expected. Of course there is the planned deployment of the galileo system. However, more novelty is on the horizon. An example of that is localization based on environmental awareness.

Overall this seminar wants to give an overview of what can be expected for electronic indoor and outdoor localization systems. The overview will be given from a technology as well as from an application point of view.

ABSTRACTS

Ultra-wideband indoor location systems and how they are transforming industry today - Andy Ward, CTO and VP Engineering Ubisense
Ultrawideband (UWB) technology is a relatively recent development which lends itself to high-accuracy indoor location sensor systems. In this talk, I'll discuss the difficulties surrounding in-building location, and why traditional systems (like GPS) don’t work well in that environment. I will also describe the characteristics and architecture of a UWB location system, and show how it addresses these problems. Finally, I'll present case studies demonstrating how these systems are delivering value in industrial applications today.

Key points:

What might the future hold for indoor location, and what role will UWB play?

  • Why indoor location is particularly difficult
  • What is ultra-wideband (UWB) radio, and why is it useful for in-building location?
  • The typical characteristics of an ultra-wideband location system
  • Case studies of UWB location systems being used in industry

Outdoor positioning: from meter accuracy with GPS to cm accuracy anywhere, anytime using multi-sensor multisystem solutions - Bruno Bougard, R&D Project Manager Septentrio
GPS has become a standard feature in our cars and smartphones. The associated navigation and location based applications and services are getting ubiquitous. They are however still limited to a few meter in accuracy. Higher accuracy positioning, down to a few cm, is already standard practice in many outdoor industrial applications. Precision is addictive and we expect a proliferation of higher accuracy applications with increasing demands in terms of availability, reliability, accuracy and cost. Septentrio will present the current state-of-the-art in high precision outdoor positioning, and the challenges that lay ahead to make cm-level positioning truly ubiquitous.

Scope/content :

  • Brief intro on GPS, and the error sources
  • - Atmospheric influence
    - Interference
    - Signal visibility
  • “classical” state-of-the-art high-precision solutions : multifrequency, multi system and sensor integration (INS)
  • Wishes and Research
  • - Moving indoor with outdoor technology
    - Signals of opportunity
    - Vision

Picture perfect positioning for high accuracy surveying and modeling - Maarten Vergauwen, Head of Research and co-founder GeoAutomation
GeoAutomation is a Leuven-based mobile-mapping company with a strong focus on high accurate surveying and modeling.
With the advent of popular tools like Google's StreetView, mobile-mapping technology is becoming more common every day.
There are, however, many demanding applications that expect high accuracy measurements in sometimes difficult environments, which are very difficult to achieve with off-the-shelve solutions. GeoAutomation has developed its own technology to deal with these challenging issues.

In this talk we will discuss the following items:

  • Introduction to GeoAutomation
  • More info on GeoAutomation's technology that combines computer-vision algorithms with different sources of positional information.
  • Accurate positioning is only the first step: how do we extend this to high precision measurements of the world.
  • Several examples of measuring, surveying and city modeling projects will be shown
