Professor James (Jim) Utterback is one of the pioneers of innovative research and spin-off businesses. Since the early 80's he has published extensively on the phenomenon of academic spin-offs. His research is among the most cited in the field of innovation and technology transfer. His later research focuses on how new scientific findings are transformed into technological applications and eventually find their way to the market and business. He is one of the pioneers of the Technology & Innovation Management research group at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and the MIT Industrial Liaison Office, which has since become an international role model for cooperation between universities and industry.
