IPTEC Tech Transfer Award


K.U.Leuven Research & Development (LRD) has been awarded the IPTEC Tech Transfer Award in Frankfurt. This award recognizes institutions with an outstanding record in technology transfer: making the bridge between science and industry, and getting technologies to the market. LRD faced fierce competition. The other finalists in the category 'universities' were Columbia University (USA), Imperial Innovations (UK), MIT (USA) and Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation (USA). It is the third time this award is presented; previous winners of the IPTEC Award were Stanford University (USA, 2006) and Tsinghua University (China, 2007).

Leuven Research & Development received the award during the two-day IPTEC-conference in Frankfurt, Germany. IPTEC is an international networking organization aiming at bringing together universities and the industry. Other awards were granted to Max Planck Innovation (in the category of 'government agency') and Procter & Gamble (in the category of 'industry').

K.U.Leuven was founded in 1425 and is Belgium's largest university catering for more than 33,000 students. With a budget of ? 1.3 Bn it strongly focuses on top level research. Its technology transfer office, K.U.Leuven Research & Development (LRD), was created in 1972 as one of the first tech transfer offices in Europe. It currently employs 50 people and has overseen the incorporation of and provided guidance to more than 80 spin-out companies (several of which has become quoted companies). LRD manages a large patent portfolio, whereby multiple products have been introduced to the market.
