Materialise and DSM Somos set a new standard for investment casting patterns

Materialise and DSM Somos present their high-quality alternative for lost wax models at Euromold 2009, Frankfurt, Germany

Leuven (BELGIUM), 26 November, 2009. Europe's leading rapid prototyping and manufacturing service bureau, Materialise, have announced the implementation of TetraShellTM stereolithography (SL) models in investment casting processes, resulting in metal models of a superior quality.

Materialise uses TetraShellTM software (a proprietary DSM Somos application module supported by Materialise's Magics software) in conjunction with Somos® resins, to build light-weight hollow SL models with enhanced structural integrity that serve as a first-class alternative for most wax models.

Bart Van der Schueren, Director at Materialise: 'Introducing stereolithography in investment casting processes is not new. What is striking about using TetraShellTM models as investment casting patterns is the superior quality of the end result. The tetrahedron structure of the SL models is much more stable than previously offered solutions, which ensures a first-class end product. TetraShellTM SL models in combination with Materialise's Mammoth stereolithography technology creates a lot of potential for light-weight investment casting patterns with large dimensions up to 2 meters.'

Materialise invites everyone to come and see a remarkable example of this technology at this year's Euromold: a bronze Kouros bust on the Materialise booth (Hall 11, C62) and its TetraShellTM stereolithography equivalent on the DSM Somos booth (Hall 11, E04).

About Materialise
Materialise, with headquarters in Belgium, started in 1990 in the sector of rapid prototyping. Since that time, the company has grown exponentially and has become the largest service provider in Europe, with references in the medical, automotive, aerospace and consumer electronics sectors. Materialise Industrial Services has the world's largest RP&M (rapid prototyping and manufacturing) capacity based in one location. This comprises of 24 stereolithography machines (including 10 patented Mammoth stereolithography machines with a build platform of 2100 x 700 x 800 mm), 20 FDM machines, 8 laser sintering machines, 1 PolyJet machine and 1 3D-printing machine. Materialise aims at staying the largest provider of plastic prototypes and RP&M solutions, offering the widest range of technologies and largest capacity to support its customers in their product development process.

About DSM Somos
DSM Somos is a leading global material supplier to the rapid prototyping industry, providing stereolithography resins used for the creation of three-dimensional models and prototypes directly from digital data. DSM Somos' ProtoFunctionalT materials are used in a variety of industries, including automotive, aerospace, medical and telecommunications. SOMOS® resins for stereolithography provide advanced technology to respond to the changing needs of new product development and industrial design. These materials demonstrate a varying range of performance properties including: transparency, superior humidity and heat resistance, and mechanical properties which replicate those of many production grade plastics such as polypropylene, polyethylene, ABS and PBT. DSM Somos is an unincorporated subsidiary of DSM Desotech Inc. (www.dsmdesotech.com), and part of the global DSM family (www.dsm.com).
