Comprehensive sound source localization solutions maximize efficiency

New cutting-edge near-field acoustic holography contributes to top HD results

LMS International continues to offer the most extensive range of sound source localization techniques. Two recent additions to the portfolio, the LMS Test.Lab High Definition Acoustic Camera and LMS Test.Lab 3D Acoustic Camera, separate acoustics cameras for exterior and interior sound source localization respectively, shed new light onto even the most complex sound source localization issues.

Aimed at exterior studies, the LMS Test.Lab High Definition Acoustic Camera is a circular array of 36 or 54 microphones with a wide-angle camera for identifying sound sources up to 20 kHz. Output includes a color-coded sound pressure map super-imposed on a full-surface photograph of the test specimen. This may be a complete vehicle, major subsystem or individual component. Sound fields can be animated using time and/or frequency data to clearly show acoustic hot spots. The LMS Test.Lab High Definition Acoustic Camera supports both real-time far-field and real-time near-field sound source localization. The camera's wide-angle lens array provides sharp pictures even when taken close to the structure. Unique on the market, the newest feature, near-field acoustic holography (NAH), is used to process close-to-the-source measurements significantly improving spatial resolution and delivering highly accurate results in the low frequency range.

Tracking down the source of annoying interior noise is a tough, time-consuming job with interference and reverb easily getting in the way. The new sound source localization solution, LMS Test.Lab 3D Acoustics Camera, precisely identifies unwanted interior sounds right at the source. Based on spherical beam-forming, LMS Test.Lab 3D Acoustics Camera scans the full sound profile of a vehicle interior with a laser. Its high dynamic range and excellent spatial resolution clearly separates sound sources close to each other. Identified sound sources can be projected on the geometry itself or right on an actual 3D digital image. This real-time result maximizes SSL accuracy and lets engineers assess on the spot.

Bruno Massa, Vice-President Test Division at LMS International added, 'With these new sound source localization tools, LMS offers the most comprehensive SSL portfolio on the market today. Since there is not a single technique that fits all possible acoustic testing requirements, LMS can help its customers select the most appropriate solution. In addition, the new techniques largely improve the efficiency of pinpointing noise issues and creating the best-possible end products.'

The choice of acoustic cameras and arrays is just one part of the LMS Test.Lab Acoustic and NVH Testing solutions that let engineers perform a wide range of studies including transmission loss, sound intensity, absorption loss, modal analysis, sound quality and transfer path analysis.
