eSATURNUS announces a technological breakthrough.

eSATURNUS, the Leuven based MedTech technology company specialized in advanced digital integration of operating rooms, interventional labs and diagnostic rooms announces a technological breakthrough. The technology is ready for 3D and UltraHD (4K) video transmission in Ultra Low Latency and original quality, on standard Gigabit Ethernet and switches. Technological demonstrators and production ready installation scenarios will be showcased at the world’s largest medical device tradeshow, the upcoming Medica in Dusseldörf, Germany.

eSATURNUS will showcase a 3D and UltraHD(4K) capable version of its digital operating room NUCLeUS at the upcoming Medica 2015, using standard Gigabit Ehternet switches (1000 baseT). This way the company continues its track of offering customers an extremely future proof integration platform, regardless of new and emerging video or data standards.

Although the first UltraHD endoscopic cameras have been introduced to the market only recently, eSATURNUS strongly believes that UltraHD(4K) imaging might soon become the future video standard in medicine and endoscopy.

The extension to Ultra HD(4K) and 3D video of the patented RtoR technology for Ultra-Low Latency video transport over standard TCP/IP networks confirms the company’s dedication to future-proof, scalable and vendor-neutral solutions;

  • RtoR has been kept compatible with standard gigabit networks, even for UltraHD or 3D content.
  • Unlike competitive offerings, the NUCLeUS platform therefore does not need any infrastructural upgrades. The existing wiring and switches can be reused as-is, without the need for additional cables or more powerful network equipment. Existing Smart Digital Operating Rooms from eSATURNUS can be upgraded with limited or no downtime. The transition from HD to UltraHD(4K) comes as easy and natural as was the case for going from standard definition to high definition.
  • Mixed installations combining SD, HD and UltraHD(4K) remain possible.
  • eSATURNUS’ Smart Medical Applications (rotation correction, vascularization…)will also support UltraHD in future versions of the software.

Furthermore, the company remains loyal to the vision of transforming integrated operating rooms into smart, vendor-neutral and connected operating rooms;

  • The use of standard networks prevents the operating room from becoming an information island. Every network outlet in the hospital building or campus can become an extension of the operating room video or data platform. This allows to surgeons, remote peers, students…to collaborate and securely exchange and unlock information in UltraHD to the benefit of the patient.
  • The transition from HD to UltraHD causes an explosion in the amount of compute power required to make recordings, facilitate collaboration and most importantly run computer vision enabled Smart Medical Applications. The use of standard networks unlocks the hospital’s data room to the operating room, where virtually unlimited amounts of compute power can be installed.
  • The video and data interpreting, transforming or enhancing, together with all advanced workflow integration remains software driven. This said, the NUCLeUS plaform will continue to improve over its lifetime, and will virtually not age. In contrary.
  • The use of standardized network using CAT5/6 to the outlet and fiber between switches, leads to a very cost efficient and scalable approach. Moreover, it is proven to offer medical grade safety, and in combination with the eSATURNUS technology to be fully IEC 60601 compliant.

In the past 15 years, we have seen IP based integration of Electronic Patient Records, Hospital Information Systems, Radiology Information Systems, Patient Monitoring, bedside entertainment, nurse call systems, telephony, security,…. and much more.

eSATURNUS was the first to also run Operating Room Integration on the same consolidated network infrastructure, and is now ready to upgrade this offering to UltraHD and 3D.
