LMS released improved methods for Root Cause Analysis of NVH Problems


LMS International has released Rev 12 of LMS Test.Lab, its integrated testing solution for noise-vibration-harshness (NVH) engineering. Rev 12 introduces a wealth of new features and enhanced solutions. In particular, it substantially improves the results accuracy of Transfer Path Analysis (TPA), one of the key analysis methods in LMS Test.Lab.

TPA is a well-known technique that is commonly used to solve vibro-acoustic issues. As a systematic method to detect root causes of NVH problems, TPA is widely adopted across many industries. LMS has developed technology innovations that drastically speed up TPA processes. Improvements in LMS Test.Lab Rev 12 ensure that fast TPA results maintain or exceed the accuracy level of classical TPA methods, while providing engineering insight early in the development process.

“TPA plays a crucial role in the NVH optimization process through its ability to evaluate the contribution along each transfer path from the true source of noise and vibration to the receiver,” said Bruno Massa, Vice President, Test Operations at LMS International. “This makes it possible to identify the components along that path that need to be modified to solve a specific problem. One of our main objectives with LMS Test.Lab Rev 12 was to eliminate possible pitfalls in several advanced TPA techniques in order to ensure reliable results.”

Several types of acquired data can be used in TPA analysis including vibration and acoustic signals as well as strain data. Strain data is valuable because it generally helps clearly identify local forces. However, very low strain values can potentially impair calculations when solving the TPA matrix, yielding noisy results. With Rev 12, the mixed strain, vibration and acoustics signals are automatically balanced in the equations for guaranteed correct matrix inversion results.

Rev 12 also offers a significant enhancement of LMS OPAX, a TPA method for load identification that substantially reduces the measurement time needed to build the full data model. Rev 12 makes it possible to constrain intermediate results to ensure their validity so that only physically relevant results are retained in every step of the process. Purely mathematical solutions (for example a negative mass) are thus rejected. All results, whether intermediate or final, are valid and can be used reliably, for example as input to simulation models.
